KALA ARTWORKS
  • On the 21st of January 2016, a design walk was organised by the architectural design faculties of KSSA. It took place in gavipuram near the Gangadhareshwara temple. The design walk began with exploration of the Hanumantha Nagar Park along with Architect Kqili, who knew the place like the back of her hand. As we went ourbaway, we were briefed about the history of Gavipuram and the forces shaping the architecture of that era. Divided into groups of 3, we documented historic structures like the Kempegowda structure, the Harihara temple and a parasol stone structure. Along with this, the area was mapped out. Once that was wrapped up we headed to meet a group of Foreign Exchange Student from Wisconsin USA. These students were in Bangalore to study globalisation, environmental issues and their impact. With them we visited two rural houses, a local wedding hall, an ancient graveyard, the samadhi of Sajjanrao, a Kempe Gowda monument and the Gavi Gangadeshwara temple. Our final stop was a site chosen for our next design assignment of designing a public utility space. It was a pleasant surprise to see that inspite of western influences Bangalore had still retained it authenticity and traditions. The design walk boosted our knowledge and gave us and insight into the architecture of India's garden city.
